The word ‘lamp’ can be traced back to the Sanskrit term ‘la’ meaning light, ‘maj’ meaning flame, ‘ru’ meaning wheel or axle, and ‘stakhi’ meaning to turn or rot. In its modern sense, a lamp, a movable device usually consisting of a tube-like body containing a fixed wick encircled by metal threads, and at the bottom, other light-generating devices as electric and gas lamps. The first lamp was invented more than 70,000 years ago. Ancient Egyptians have been found carrying firewood and reed lamps which were probably used to provide light during the night.

Modern lamps, as we use them today, are movable or detachable lighting sources that are either powered by electricity, battery cells, gas or an internal mechanism. Most modern lamps are made of tungsten and have a glass base with a protective cover over the bulb. A lampshade is usually fixed over the bulb. There are several different types of lighting that use electricity to function; they include wall sconces, desk lamps, table lamps, floor lamps, outdoor lamps, and pendant lights. All these lamps have one common denominator, which is that they provide illumination and are mainly used to create ambiance.

There are many types of lamps that are used for lighting. Floor lamps, table lamps, desk lamps, and pendant lamps are some of the many types of lamps available. Wall sconces are used for general purpose lighting and can come in many shapes and sizes, being made in all manner of shapes and colors. Desk lamps are used for reading or writing, while table lamps are used for lighting work tables and for general task lighting. In the late 18th century, oil lamps became popular worldwide and are now a standard item in almost every home.
