Lamp Base Parts

The lamp base is an essential piece that serves as the foundation of a light fixture. Not only does it anchor the entire piece, but it also provides stability and support for the shade and pole section. Lamp bases can take on a wide variety of shapes and styles, making them a powerful design element that can create a whole new look for your light fixture.

There are several key components to a lamp base that make up its functionality and aesthetics, including the socket, switch, and finial. The socket is where the bulb is attached and is used to provide power to the light fixture. The sockets can be in a number of different styles and sizes, depending on the type of fixture and bulb being used.

Bulb base sizes are another important factor to consider when selecting a lamp base for your home. The screw-in bulbs that are used in most light fixtures come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Each of these different shapes require a specific type of socket to properly operate. This information can be found on the label of the bulb packaging, but it’s also a good idea to know what size socket your lamp requires before purchasing one.

Sockets come in a wide range of sizes and designs, but the most popular are standard or Edison-style sockets. These types of sockets are most commonly used in table lamps, ceiling fixtures and some floor lamps. Standard sockets have an approximate inside diameter opening of 1 inch. The next most common socket is the candelabra base, which are more decorative and typically found in chandeliers. Candelabra base sockets have an approximate inside diameter opening of 7/16 inches. The last base option is the intermediate, which are more uncommon but may be seen in some decorative lamps from Europe. The intermediate socket has an approximate inside diameter opening of 5/8 inch. The largest socket available is the mogul, which is used in a few floor lamps and some reflector style fixtures.

Once the socket is chosen, the lamp post harp is placed over it to provide the vertical support and light socket attachment. From here, the lamp shade is placed over the harp and the lamp is ready for use. A final decorative touch is added to the harp in the form of a lamp finial, which screws onto the top of the harp and can be purchased in a variety of shapes and styles to match the light fixture. Lamp finials can even be personalized to suit a homeowner’s taste.
